Description
Facter is a digital investigation tool designed by Media Matters for Democracy (MMfD) exclusively to facilitate newsrooms to counter mis-and-disinformation in Pakistan. What sets it apart from other fact-checking initiatives is that it accessible via a Chrome extension to the newsrooms that have signed up for it. The Facter database is regularly updated with fact-checks on Misinformation, Disinformation, and Malinformation (MDM) monitored across social media platforms by a team of dedicated young digital investigators at MMfD. Facter functions as both a tool and a platform for streamlining fact-checking processes for newsrooms. Facter provides newsrooms with a request feature, where they submit a piece of information for fact-checking.
The demonstration will focus on the technical operations of Facter, categorization of MDM in its database, and how the fact-checks are delivered to the newsrooms on a daily basis. Facter is presently deployed at more than 10 national and regional newsrooms in Pakistan. The showcase will help participants gain ideas and expertise for the development of sustainable digital investigation tools for both newsrooms and general public. In addition, it will help young journalists gain a better understanding of fact checking by delving into the complexities of MDM, and how these information disorders can be tackled with sustainable, convenient, and easy-to-access digital products both in newsrooms and independently.
